The Healing Power of Love: Reflections on the Parable of the Pearl of Great Price and the Meaning of Names

While my grandma was on hospice last month, I found myself reflecting on names. Cordelia, also my daughter’s name, means “daughter of the sea” and “heart.” Similarly, my other daughter is named Althea, meaning “healing” and “rose of Sharon,” the biblical flower.

The rose of Sharon is a symbol of healing and beauty. In the Song of Solomon, the beloved is compared to the rose of Sharon, showing that she is precious and beloved. Similarly, God’s love for us is like a healing balm. It brings beauty to our lives and heals our brokenness. We see this love in action in the life of Jesus, who healed the sick, restored sight to the blind, and brought hope to the hopeless.

Althea’s name reminds me that God’s love brings healing to our lives. It reminds me of the power of prayer and the importance of seeking healing for ourselves and others. Just as the rose of Sharon brings beauty and healing to the world, so too does God’s love bring beauty and healing to our lives.

God’s love is often compared to the vastness of the sea. The name Cordelia reminds me that we are not only daughters of the sea and heart but also pearls of great price to God. This is a testament to how much He loves us. The parable of the pearl of great price illustrates how the merchant sold all he had to buy the pearl. Similarly, Jesus gave up everything to purchase our salvation. He recognized our worth and value and willingly paid the price for us.

So today I encourage you to remember the meaning behind our names and the vastness of God’s love for us. Let us seek healing and restoration in our lives and in the lives of those around us. Let us remember that we are precious and beloved to God and that His love brings beauty and healing to our lives.

Let’s pray:

Dear God, thank you for the gift of my daughters, Cordelia and Althea. Their names remind us of the vastness of your love and the healing power of your grace. May we seek healing in our lives and in the lives of those around us. May we remember that we are precious and beloved to you and that your love brings beauty and restoration to our lives.

Thank you for the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross, which makes it possible for us to be called your children. May we never forget the price that was paid for our salvation, and may we live our lives in gratitude and love for you.

Bless all the Cordelias and Altheas in our lives, and may they know they are loved by you. May they grow to be strong and faithful women who seek your will in all things. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
