Why We Breathe is a film that I’ve really enjoyed, and is available on DVD if you’re looking for a Christmas gift to give this season. You can also stream it on Amazon & PureFlix!

It’s a film about a singer-songwriter and her daughter who move from the big city to small-town Nolensville, TN to escape a violent past that will eventually catch up with them.

A VIOLENT PAST. A FRESH START. LEARNING TO BREATHE.

For Carrie Hicks, life has become a marathon. Working doubles at the diner, running to gigs at bars to chase her elusive dream of becoming a singer-songwriter, helping her 10-year old daughter, Emma, with homework, and all the while supporting Rodney, her violent, deadbeat boyfriend. But when Rodney’s abuse lands him in jail and Emma in a wheelchair, Carrie makes a run for it with her daughter.

Carrie and Emma attempt to start again in the tiny Tennessee town of Nolensville with help from Carrie’s Uncle Earl and his church-folk friends. But when Rodney comes looking for them, Carrie and Emma must find strength they never knew they had. Can they at last find peace? (With the gritty Southern feel of “The Apostle,” the quirky small-town characters of “Lars and the Real Girl,” and the heart of “The Spitfire Grill,” “Why We Breathe” is a powerful story of community, faith, and redemption.

My Thoughts on the Movie

I watched this movie on Pureflix earlier this year, and loved it. I decided to watch it because I was intrigued by the story and the title, “Why We Breathe”. When I left an abusive relationship years ago, and was overwhelmed with the thought of raising two toddlers on my own (while overcoming trauma) I felt much like Carrie in the scene below. The following scene depicts Carrie (Alexandra Sedlak) at her wits end. She’s exhausted physically, emotionally, and spiritually. But some wise words from Uncle Earl (Derrick Dee) gave her hope to carry on.

โ€œCome to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

Matthew 11:28

The reason I was intrigued with the title of the movie “Why We Breath” is because the Lord always whispered similar words to my heart when I felt anxious and depressed. I suffered from panic attacks and suicidal thoughts, and He always comforted me and told me to “just breathe.” The Lord told me to “hold tight, because He was writting me a new song”. In Zephaniah 3:17 it says, “The LORD your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, He will rejoice over you with singing.” He would always tell me to “Be still and know He is God, and that I didnโ€™t need to โ€œdoโ€ anything but rest in being a daughter! This is why I really enjoyed this movie, because I loved the story line as it’s packed with wisdom, and it reminds me so much of my story of redemption and the goodness and faithfulness of God. This movie is a great reminder to not let fear and anxiety overcome you, but to rest in the promises of the Lord.

We put our hope in the Lord.
He is our help and our shield.
In him our hearts rejoice,
for we trust in his holy name.
Let your unfailing love surround us, Lord,
for our hope is in you alone.

Psalm 33:20-22

My opinions are 100% my own.
