Teaching Kids to Trust in God for Rest: An Object Lesson on Physical and Spiritual Refreshment

Teaching kids to trust in God for rest can be done through a simple object lesson. Begin by showing them a pillow and explaining how it helps us sleep. Without a pillow, we’d be uncomfortable and wake up with sore necks and backs. Sleep is essential for our bodies and minds, as it heals and digests our food, boosts our immune system, and improves our moods, concentration, and memory.

Just like a pillow provides physical rest, Jesus offers rest for our souls. When we’re anxious or exhausted, we can trust Him to give us peace and take our burdens away. By coming to Jesus, we can find relief from the exhausting yokes of control over our lives. Spending time with Him through reading the Bible, praying, meditating on our true identity in Christ, and filling our minds with life-giving shows and music can refresh our weary hearts and minds.

Trusting in God can calm our fears and give us the necessary peace and rest. As we lie down to sleep, we can remember that our souls find rest in Jesus. By embracing the spirit of power, love, and self-control that God has given us, we can trust Him to provide comfort and rest for our souls.

“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

Matthew‬ ‭11:28‬ ‭ESV‬‬

  1. No one has ever told me to feel my anxiety when it comes up. My heavy cardio exercise does nothing to hurt me. So when I have these panic attacks about worrying about my heart, I know it’s irrational. But when you said to actually embrace the symptoms, that made me feel insanely better. It’s a first step for sure.
