Object Lesson About Priorities

“‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ Matthew 22:37

Here is an object lesson using quarters and a plastic Easter egg to show how you can’t make God and the things of this world the priority of your life at the same time.

Give me understanding, so that I may keep your law and obey it with all my heart. Psalm 119:34

The Object Lesson:

Place a pile of coins down to represent things of this world – shiny and attractive. Then have an Easter Egg that will represent our relationship with God.

Kids Task: With one hand only, pick up all the change on the table. They have to do it while they are holding the egg in their hand. They can’t change the position of the egg, remove it, or move it to the other hand – your relationship with God is your relationship with God. Explain to the child that you’ll let them keep the change that they’re able to pick up. Give them 30 seconds to do it. At the end of the game they can keep whatever they have in their hands – except the egg.

At the end of the game explain that if they had just chosen the egg over the change they would have gotten what was inside the egg – $5.00

When we have a relationship with God, we are often tempted to go after the things of this world. But, we already have a relationship with God – we have everything we need. But that is NOT enough for us. We want that PLUS the things of the world. So we find out after the fact that we come up with less than we could have had if we had just clung on to our relationship with God.

Don’t give up what you have with God, and disobey and go after something that the world is offering. Set your priorities.
