Sing, dance, and learn a new language with ‘The Hummingbird’

The Hummingbird Sings and Dances is a great book to read/listen to with your children.  Hispanic Heritage Month is September 15 – October 15, so this would be particularly wonderful if you’re wanting to encourage bilingual learning through pictures and singing.  The book contains 19 traditional nursery rhymes and lullabies in Spanish originating from Latin America that have withstood the test of time.  The illustrations are from Mariana Ruiz Johnson, and are bursting with color and appeal, and the text is in both English and Spanish.  The warm, colorful illustrations with earth-toned backgrounds provide the setting for this endearing repertoire of family-friendly songs from 17 different countries.  A map of Latin America and complete lyrics in Spanish with English appears at the end of the book.  The songs are in Spanish, and are performed by Mexico City based Grupo Cantaro.

This book is a really wonderful way to introduce children to music from many Latin American cultures and to get the whole family dancing.  We really enjoyed this musical book, and the girls found the illustrations fun with the vibrant colors!
